Sheath: Brown Rayskin Inlaid in Hand-Carved Leather
Knife: "Alegre" means bright and cheerful and this knife will be a great friend and tool for the user, yet is fine enough for the collector.
This one is custom dedicated to a USMC Marine honoring his service and
duty.
The tough tanto-style blade is a great design; the blade geometry allows the user to apply significant force on the secondary edge. The knife has a
thin, useable tip and a point that is slightly dropped (curved downward), which makes this knife easy and smooth to sheath. The blade is 440C high
chromium martensitic stainless tool steel for the least care, highest longevity and greatest corrosion resistance of any stainless tool steel. I've
hollow ground and mirror finished it to a beautiful polish, and the blade has clean, clear, crisp grind lines. I decided on a simple, easy to clean
filework, a light zig-zag pattern that extends completely around the fully tapered tang. The knife has a matching angular choil for good edge definition
and ease of sharpening. The bolsters are zero-care 304 austenitic high nickel-chromium stainless steel, super tough and completely corrosion resistant.
They're dovetailed and hold a beautiful pair of Mahogany Obsidian gemstone scales (also frequently called "Goldshine Obsidian"). The
obsidian is glassy and smooth, with a few tiny bubbles to remind you that this stone spewed forth as liquid rock from the mouth of a volcanic eruption.
The obsidian is well-protected at the edges by the bolsters and full tang. The handle fits the hand well, with good front and rear quillons, and a
small butt for better weight balance, this knife is comfortable in either traditional or tactical grip style.
Sheath: The sheath had to match the knife, so I made one of my beautiful black pocket sheaths, with seven perfectly matched inlays of tough brown rayskin
to compliment the brown-black of the gemstone. Hand-carved accents surround the inlays that are deeply set in the 9-10 oz. leather shoulder, and the
sheath is hand-stitched with polyester sinew, the toughest binder on the market, lacquered, and sealed. The knife sits deep and protected in the sheath,
and is carried with a 2" belt loop.
A great knife for use or collection, dedicated to a great Marine.
