I've made a new layout for the tactical knife descriptions, seen on this page. I've separated the components, briefly describing them in individual boxes. In those boxes are links to dedicated pages describing everything about the part, component, or accessory. The pages are substantial, and offer the history, operation, materials, use, mounting, and care of each accessory.

The Knife

  • Size: Length overall: 12.25" (31.1 cm), Blade Length: 6.0" (15.2 cm), Thickness: 0.285" (7.2 mm)
  • Weight: 20.5 oz. (581 grams)

  • Handle: Black Carbon Fiber Composite
  • Type/Purpose/Origin: This is my most popular professional counterterrorism and tactical combat knife for a reason. It's designed with and made for real counterterrorism professionals and is one of the most sought-after knives on the planet.
"Ari" is the Hebrew word for lion, and the lion is the sign of the tribe of Judah and Jerusalem and is even called the Lion of God. Made for daylight and more importantly critical night operations, this knife is the Ari B'Lilah (lion by night), and is one of the most sophisticated and unique counterterrorism knives in the world. Unlike most knives, this knife was created with the direct input of professionals of a top Israeli YAMAM counterterrorism unit, widely recognized as the most elite and effective counterterrorism unit in the world. This is a knife designed for the most serious of action. It's a great honor to have the input, guidance, and direction of these professionals, who requested a series of extremely efficient, well-designed and constructed, lethal combat knives with some special features, built to the highest standards possible: what I'm known for in tactical combat knives, sheaths, and accessories.
  • Blade Steel Alloy: The Ari B'Lilah blade is the proven hypereutectoid, high alloy martensitic stainless tool steel, 440C. This is my most requested steel for a reason. When properly treated, it's a dependable, reliable workhorse of extremely high corrosion resistance, great toughness and high wear resistance. The extremely high chromium of 440C along with the high carbon and moderate molybdenum results in profuse chromium carbides, increasing corrosion resistance as well as wear resistance. There is a reason that 440C is the steel that all other stainless tool steels are compared to. This steel is suitable for marine saltwater use.
  • Heat Treatment: This Ari B'Lilah has my T4 heat treatment, yielding an astounding blade in incredible condition through advanced processing protocols. How advanced is this treatment? It's a multi-stage cryogenic treatment, involving temperatures ranging in over 2000°F (1090°C) to -320°F (-196°C). The process is an evolution of my advanced heat treating processes, and consists of 33 dedicated and specific steps and takes 172 hours. This means that just to heat treat this blade takes over a week. The reason for this is scientific and critical, but yields the most stable, most wear-resistant, most durable and long-lived structure of this steel, profuse with fine multi-element carbides and a uniform and unbelievably robust structure. This is a testament to my determination to make the very best knives, steels, treatments and kits in the modern world. I know of no one else who has advanced the treatment to this level; it's unheard of in the metals and knifemaking field. Want to know more about the heat treating designation?
  • Blade Design and Geometry: The blade of the Ari B'Lilah is double-edged and hollow ground; the main cutting edge is hollow ground with a 3" diameter wheel and the top edge with serrations is hollow ground with a 3" diameter wheel. This is an extremely difficult grind profile, and the purpose is to create two complimentary edges, both yielding extremely thin and razor-keen edges with a high longevity while preserving a good cross-sectional thickness of center spine to support thrusting and the point. The point of this knife is critically strong; it is ground in a very ancient design called "armor piercing." This description is not because it will today's advanced armor, but because it could pierce chain mail of old: interlocking metal rings woven into a tough mesh. This is the strongest possible point that will still offer extremely sharp and lethal penetrating potential, resisting any tough or hard materials such a thrust could encounter without breaking. The point is carefully hand-ground at the maximum edge angle (25 degrees) possible that can still provide a keen and slicing single-bevel cutting edge. The geometry of the point is a solid "diamond" (in cross section), as tough and lethal as a knife point can possibly be. The point is created by an interrupted hollow grind; the transition to strong point is well-matched and supported by the full thickness spine running down the center of the blade. Both cutting edges are single bevel. This means that there is one slanted line (bevel) from the hollow grind that creates the cutting edge. Most knives are made with double bevel edges, increasing the actual cutting edge angle. The main non-serrated cutting edge is is a straight tanto which has 2.5" of piercing point in front of the dividing line (yokote), and 3.4" of straight edge between the dividing line and the choil. The top edge is designed with my Hammerhead serrations, which are extremely tough and aggressive, with reduced snagging and wide transitions between concavities and segmented edges. This is my most requested serration profile because it is extremely aggressive and tough. The grinds on the blade are accurate, concise, and with nicely radiused grind terminations for great transfer of energy without stressing the blade-to-handle ricasso area while a very long supportive spine runs the length of the blade.
  • This is an extreme use, high wear resistance, highly tough, and extremely keen high alloy powder metal stainless steel blade that has extremely high corrosion resistance, with advanced heat treatment.
  • Blade Finish: The blade and bolsters (and all of the accessories) are in my "Shadow" line of counterterrorism and tactical knife finishes. Answering the request for completely subdued and non-reflective surfaces, I developed the Shadow Line with my Ghost Slate finish. This means darkening in a permanent fashion not only the stainless steel of the knife, blade, handle, and fittings, but all of the gear in the entire kit: the fasteners, the sheath parts, aluminum mounts, accessories and entire package. Read more about my Shadow Line and Ghost Slate finish on my Counterterrorism Knives page at this bookmark.
  • Bolsters: I bolstered the Ari B'Lilah with my signature zero-care, high nickel, high chromium 304 austenitic stainless steel bolsters, contoured and rounded for comfort of the hands, and shaped and radiused in the front face for easy cleaning. They are attached with multiple through-tang pins of 304 stainless steel, and the mounting is permanent, as well as extremely corrosion-resistant. This is the same steel used for stainless steel nuts, bolts, and fasteners, and the bolsters are heavy, thick, and solid, giving great balance to the knife. The front bolster is contoured around a 1.25" (3.2 cm) oval forward finger ring, which is rounded and radiused for comfort and smoothness. The finger ring offers maximum security between the hand and the knife, essential in the most critical of counter-terrorism and combat tactical offensives. This is a feature that is key in cementing the hand-to-knife grip. The forefinger and thumb grip between the thumb rise and the finger ring, and this reinforced area is key to the control of the knife. The ring and thumb rise allow tremendous force to be applied to the blade where it is needed. The rear bolster has a large chamfered 3/8" (10 mm) through-tang lanyard hole for added security when working elevated or over water or in a debris field. The bolsters are dovetailed to create a solid, seamless union with the handle material. The bolsters are treated in my "Ghost Slate" shadow line for reduced glare and match the rest of the knife and gear.
  • Handle: The handle scales are black carbon fiber composite, a reinforced material that is one of the most trusted, durable, and dependable manmade handle materials on earth. The handle scales are dovetailed and locked and bedded under the bolsters, secured with two heavy 304 stainless steel pins. The handle shape is comfortable and extremely secure, with deep quillons, good belly, and slope for the heel of the hand that makes the knife an extension of the arm. The tang is fully fileworked with an extremely bold "shield wall" pattern for increased purchase and handmade definition. The tang is fully tapered, with plenty of thickness at the butt for a substantial stout talon (skull crusher or persuader) also applicable for non-lethal inducement. Additional uses for this feature include glass breakage, breaching, and hammer-clawing for material destruction for entrance. The heavy rear bolster is significantly mounted to the tang, and has an extra-large 3/8" through-tang lanyard hole for super security when working elevated or near water or in special circumstances that require insurance against dropping the knife. The large lanyard hole is chamfered and dressed smooth for abrasion reduction of the lanyard and is easy and fast to thread.
  • Balance and Feel: The center of balance of the knife is exactly at the finger ring forefinger position. The knife feels incredibly solid and durable in forward grip, blade leading. In reverse grip, with the small finger threaded through the ring and the thumb over the heel with the tip at the talon, the knife feels robust and tough. The unique handle shape, balance, thickness, and stout design of this knife makes it an incredible tool and weapon. This is, clearly, the very best counterterrorism knife made in the world today.

The Sheaths

This knife has two sheaths, one in heavy leather post-locking, one in tactical combat, hybrid tension tab-locking.

1. The Post Lock Leather Sheath
  • Weight: 10.8 oz. (306 grams)
  • Materials: Heavy 10 oz. thick leather shoulder, stainless steel reinforcement screws and marine-grade snaps, hand-stamped, black lacquered, nylon stitching
  • Storage: double-layered canvas duck embroidered drawstring bag in cotton canvas, polyester
  • Description: I've designed and made a heavy, tough, and solid leather sheath for the Ari B'Lilah, in 10 oz. leather shoulder, hand-stamped and tooled. This sheath is designed for the most secure arrangement possible using leather, my "Post-Lock." This means the knife is absolutely secure in the sheath and will not fall out unexpected. This is done by securing the knife through the finger ring with a "post" of leather reinforced by a marine grade stainless steel dot snap on the inside of the sheath. The retention function is double-strengthened by a second stainless steel dot snap through the welt, opposite of the post snap. Both snaps have to be opened and the sheath front folded away from the handle to clear the post before the knife can be removed. This makes the sheath the most reliable retention method available in any leather knife sheath made. The sheath leather is heavy shoulder, from mature cows, and is twice as thick as most other knifemakers use. The sheath mouth at its thickest is reinforced with stainless steel Chicago screws. The stamp-tooling is "axe-head" black basketweave, breaking up the light and reflection. The sheath is also useful for traditional conservative and conventional wear options. The sheath has a belt loop that can accommodate a 2.5" (6.4 cm) wide belt. The belt loop is triple-row stitched, and the main sheath welts are double-row stitched with tough nylon thread that is water and sunlight resistant. The knife fits deep and secure into the sheath, with just enough of the the handle exposed for easy unsheathing, and the high back of the sheath protecting the wearer. The sheath edges are dressed and smoothed for comfort; the sheath is sealed with lacquer for water resistance, permanence, and longevity. Leather is irreplaceable in extremely cold or hot environments, and where absolute silence is needed in tactical operations with no noise when rubbing against objects, people, or gear. The leather sheath is also great for a "non-tactical" outdoors look in a more casual setting when a knife simply needs to be a tool.
