Knife: A great custom dagger made to order, the
Charax has a determined tactical side. The Greek name comes from the
ancient and mysterious palisaded fort who's location is lost to
history. The knife was custom designed with the client for his
tactical and defensive requirements, and custom made to his
specifications. The blade is thick ATS-34 high molybdenum
martensitic stainless steel, which offers great toughness and
durability. The blade's actual cutting edge length is over seven
inches, and is double hollow ground with a three inch diameter
contact wheel for a blade cross sectional geometry that leaves
plenty of thickness in the spine while offering a very thin and durable cutting
edge. The blade spine has a five inch long cannelure, which reduces
blade weight without sacrificing strength all while limiting lateral
flexion. The cannelure, also called a fuller, is nicely radiused and
mirror polished, as is the rest of the blade for high corrosion
resistance and value. This beautiful steel is honed to a razor sharp
single bevel double edge, and the tang is fully fileworked with a
striking geometric design along the fully tapered tang. The guard is
full and three inches wide, a bolster-guard with sculpted and
polished bolsters of 304 high nickel, high chromium austenitic
stainless steel, the same steel used in tough stainless steel bolts,
screws, and fasteners. The guard shape is radiused and polished for
comfort to the hand and the rear bolster is lightly fishtailed for
security. The dovetailed bolsters bed a pair of mosaic handle scales
in nephrite jade gemstone. The Black Jade is from Australia, and has
bits of red jasper and iron with spangles of metallic pyrite and
hematite. The polished Green Jade from California is jungle green
and smooth, with a few areas of lighter color. All six pieces of
jade form a very well matched and aligned mosaic gemstone handle,
with perfect seams and smooth blending of all parts. The handle has
nice belly for comfortable grip and the filework aids with some
tactile presence. The jade and the blade steel and bolster steel are
all very tough, the jade being some of the toughest material I work
with for great durability and longevity. The knife feels strong and
substantial in the hand, with the balance point just in front of the
forefinger in forward grip style.
Sheath (Scabbard): To match the knife, I
constructed a sheath (or scabbard) from 9-10 oz. leather shoulder,
which I hand carved to accommodate eight large panel inlays of black
and green stingray skin to match the design of the handle. The
stingray is tough and bony, one of the most durable natural skins
known, and the angle of the inlays and stitching echo the
arrangement of the jade mosaic in the handle. The blade is snug in
the sheath while displaying the bolsters and handle, and the twin
belt loop arrangement allows several wear options. The leather is
dyed a medium brown, hand-stitched with polyester sinew, lacquered
and sealed.
A beautiful dagger: toughness and elegance combined!
