- Knife: My pattern Furud is named
for a singular star that is not part of any constellation, and
means the solitary one. This small knife packs a classy punch,
with a well formed drop point blade in mirror polished hollow
ground 440C high chromium martensitic stainless tool steel.
There is a slight rise in the spine so one could technically
call this a Nessmuk style blade. The
grind has a lot of belly and is gently terminated with a deep
choil, and the fully tapered tang means the knife is a solid
piece of steel from tip to butt. The blade has engraved filework
only on the spine, and the inside of the handle tang is clean
and smooth. The handle shape is a unique and comfortable design
that molds to the hand
with the first two fingers in the first hollow and the ring
finger at the rear cut. The bolsters are well balanced in
zero-care
high chromium, high nickel 304 austenitic stainless steel, which
I hand-engraved with a refined intertwined pattern set with
deeply relieved background. The dovetailed bolsters bed a pair of
unusual Spiderweb Obsidian gemstone scales, smoothly polished
and comfortable to hold. Spiderweb Obsidian is a recent find,
and my sources tell me that the mine in Mexico is all played
out, so I don't know if there will be any more of this material
available. I only have a few small pieces, and no more! The
unique obsidian has a bluish-gray background with an almost
greenish gray smoky webbing: some beautiful gemstone.
- Sheath: The sheath I made for this knife
had to match the color and class of the knife, so is
made of 9-10 oz. leather shoulder, hand-carved and hand-stitched with
tough polyester sinew. The sheath has 12 geometric inlays of
real Shark Skin, and is dyed black, lacquered, and sealed.
Thanks, R. T.!
Hi Jay,
Furud arrived yesterday, absolutely stunning. Appreciate the printed
materials along with the tag. This knife will hold center stage in my
collection, at least until another Jay Fisher knife surpasses this one.
Holding this knife makes me realize what I have been missing in the other
lesser knives I’ve bought. It’s time to scale back on quantity and
focus on quality for the collection.
Thanks again and best wishes for the holidays to you and your family.
