Knife: The Procyon is named for one of the
brightest stars in our sky. This is a substantial and striking
folding knife, from its generous frame to its
tough tanto blade design; this is the largest folding knife pattern
I make to date. The blade is mirror-polished high chromium 440C
tool steel, and I hardened and tempered it to a tough and wear-resistant
59HRC. 440C is a premium knife steel with a longstanding reputation
for high performance, used as the first choice for extremely
corrosion resistant and tough ball bearings and high pressure valve
seats. It's also the first choice of my military and professional
knife users for combat knives. I hand-engraved a light vine and tendril
pattern on the polished blade flat. This is very difficult, and requires many
hours with solid carbide gravers. The blade has a top swage to narrow the point geometry, and
the entire blade and 440C spacer spine are hardened and tempered
and fileworked with a light, offset pattern. Even the inside of the spacer
spine is fileworked, hand-engraved, and mirror polished for complete embellishment.
This bold knife has hand-engraved mirror polished bolsters of 304
high nickel, high chromium austenitic stainless steel for zero-care
and high toughness and beauty that match the blade. All of the fasteners
used in the knife are also 304
stainless steel. The liners are fileworked and anodized 6AL4V
titanium for great strength and light weight, and even the spring
lock plate is fileworked and anodized. I chose a salmon-copper color for the permanent anodizing
of the titanium to match and compliment the handle color. The handle scales are bedded to the titanium
liners and locked under the dovetailed stainless steel bolsters. They are
super-hard Brazilian Agate, an agate geode that I've carefully
sliced and heat treated to bring out the bold colors, which range
from white to salmon, from coral to orange. The scales are polished
to a glassy finish, and will literally outlast all of the metal on
the knife with little or no care. The knife is light and thin for such a large folder, and
the blade tab at the spine aids in opening the knife, with a
substantial cut-out in the obverse side handle to unlock the liner.
The action is smooth and and tight with a solid lock-up.
Case: A knife of this character and
quality needed a special place to rest, a sarcophagus both unique
and bold. I hand-carved, shaped, lapped, and polished this case
of Breccia Marble. A breccia is a stone that is made of smaller
fragments of rock that are naturally cemented into one solid piece.
This stone was once a sedimentary limestone made of the remains of
ancient sea bed, and then metamorphosed deep within the earth into
marble. It's fascinating to imagine the events, forces, and time
that it took to form this stone. This is a striking marble, ranging from beige and
tan to chocolate brown with large phenocrysts of calcite with hints
of orange, complimenting the agate handle. I lapped and polished it throughout, even on the inside surfaces,
and it feels great to the touch. The inside is carved to accept
the knife, and
is lined with beige suede leather for protection of
the knife with finger cutouts to make knife removal easy. The lid has keyed holes which engage 304
stainless steel studs for a neat fit. I inlayed neoprene feet in the bottom so
the case can safely rest on any surface without scratching.
