Knife: A very special custom handmade knife,
this Procyon is named for one of the brightest stars in our sky.
This is a very bright knife indeed, from its massive frame to its
tough tanto blade design, this is the largest folding knife pattern
I make to date. The blade is mirror polished high molybdenum ATS-34
tool steel, and I hardened and tempered it to a very wear-resistant
60HRC. I also hand-engraved a bold and contrasting scroll
pattern with solid carbide gravers, a very tough task. The blade has a top swage to narrow the point geometry, and
the entire blade and ATS-34 spacer spine are hardened and tempered
and fileworked and hand-engraved. Even the inside of the spacer
spine is fileworked and hand-engraved for complete embellishment.
This bold knife has hand-engraved mirror polished bolsters of 304
high nickel, high chromium austenitic stainless steel for zero-care
and high toughness and beauty. All of the fasteners are also 304
stainless steel. The liners are fileworked and anodized 6AL4V
titanium for great strength and light weight, and even the spring
lock plate is fileworked and anodized. I chose a green gold to light
green color for the permanent anodizing results which contrasts
nicely with the handle. The handle scales are bedded to the titanium
liners and locked under the dovetailed bolsters. They are unique
pieces of Pounamu, the rare New Zealand Greenstone, a Nephrite Jade
gemstone that is special indeed. This stone is tightly controlled
and regulated, so getting some for this special knife was a treat.
My client supplied the gem, and this particular nephrite has nice
bands of contrasting lighter veins and varies from green-brown to a
deep rich forest green. Taking a high polish, this is a very durable
gemstone, one of the toughest on earth. The finish is silky and
clean, and the knife feels massive and strong in the hand, with
smooth action and tight and solid lock-up.
Case: A knife of this character and
quality needed a special place to rest, a sarcophagus both unique
and striking. I hand-carved, shaped, lapped, and polished this case
of Quartz and Granite Terrazzo composite. This material is actually
tougher than granite, made of carefully selected quartz pebbles and
granules, bonded in a modern super-hard catalyzed resin for absolute
longevity. Since the material is completely uniform with no veins or
inclusions, it is highly durable. It is worked and polished like
solid rock, since most of it is rock, requiring diamond tools and
finishing methods. It is lapped and polished throughout, even on the inside surfaces. The inside is carved to accept
the knife, and
is lined with green suede leather for protection of
the knife. The lid has keyed holes which engage 304
stainless steel buttons for a snug fit. I inlayed neoprene feet in the bottom so
the case can safely rest on any surface without scratching.
A massive, strong, tough, and beautiful liner lock folding knife
and case.
