- Knife: A custom knife for a great client, this
Regulus is named for the brightest star in the constellation Leo.
The blade of this knife is a drop point style with a hint of a
Nessmuk design. This means the spine is raised near the tip, just a bit,
and then the spine is dropped toward the point. This makes the knife
tip strong and useful with a good sweep in the belly and a knife
blade that is easy to sheath. This Regulus has a blade in mirror
polished 440C high chromium stainless steel, a great martensitic
stainless tool steel that has great longevity, beauty, and
resistance to corrosion. It is deeply and accurately hollow ground
and sharpened to a razor keen, single bevel cutting edge. My client
requested filework on the spine only, so a clean, small pattern
extends from behind the tip to the butt of the handle. The blade is
full tang, fully tapered for balance, and is bolstered with
zero-care 304 high nickel, high chromium austenitic stainless steel.
The bolsters are engraved with a deep relief pattern of nice curves
and figures, complimenting both the profile shape of the knife and
the pattern on the curious handle material. This handle is Spiderweb
Obsidian, a rare gemstone that has light grayish-green webs of color
throughout a dark bluish-gray background. Obsidian is volcanic
glass, formed when quartz (silicon dioxide) is quickly cooled into a
large, amorphous, glassy form. The obsidian is tougher than manmade
glass, a true gemstone of the ancients, and I brightly finished the
stone scales to a glassy, smooth finish. The handle shape is a
three finger design, with the small finger wrapping around the
depression at the rear bolster. The blade feels very light in the
hand, as the balance point is at the front bolster-to-handle scale
junction.
- Sheath: My client requested a sheath with
exotic inlays, one commensurate and matching to the handle, so I created this one in 9-10 oz. leather
shoulder, hand-carved, hand-dyed black, inlaid with gray
two-tone Frog skin. The sheath is stitched with black polyester for strength and
water resistance, and the inlays are in the front, back, and even in
the belt loop. The sheath is sealed with an acrylic gloss
sealer, waxed and hand buffed for resistance against the elements
and longevity.
- A beautiful custom knife that was a pleasure to make.
